BIOGRAPHY

Expressive single warm beige brush stroke
A colourful painting of a forest scene with a narrow path winding through trees, sunlight filtering through green leaves, and patches of bluebells on the ground.

Maria Bolton is a landscape artist living and working in Derbyshire. She studied Textiles at Goldsmiths College, University of London, before training to teach at Manchester Metropolitan University. Maria now splits her time between teaching and creating, combining drawing, painting, textiles, print, and stitch to create lively contemporary landscapes.

A colourful painting of a wooded creek with lush green leaves, overhanging branches, with light filtering through the trees and reflecting in the water.

Through changing light, colour, shape and season, nature provides us with an abundant stream of glimmers. Living and working primarily in Derbyshire, I am inspired by the tickertape of transitory beauty, encountered in the landscape.  Through experimentation with textiles, print, paint and drawing, I combine heightened colour, texture and gestural realism to capture small transitory moments of arresting wonder. In creating these pieces, I want to evoke joy, in the hope of increasing our susceptibility to the centered contentment which these visual glimmers can evoke.”
