“Begin Afresh” was commissioned by C & K, a mother and daughter who asked me to create a painting for the space above their fireplace, a focal point in their living room.

When I visited to understand the atmosphere of the space, it was clear that the house had been recently decorated. As we talked, it became evident that the redecoration represented more than a change of colours or furniture—it marked a new chapter and a reassertion of a sense of self for them both.

As Alain de Botton notes in The Architecture of Happiness, C & K had created rooms that “align us to desirable versions of ourselves and keep alive the important, evanescent sides of us.”

Creating “Begin Afresh” has been a lovely collaborative experience, and it has been a real pleasure to contribute to C & K’s fresh beginning with this painting.
