Following Autumn Shadows

Often, the light on autumn days in a woodland is intense, slanting low through the trees—intensified by the absence of the diffuse canopy of spring and summer. The sun casts hard, clean shadows that cascade and interlace everywhere, joined by the stronger, longer shadows of the trees. Each year, I am struck by suddenly noticing my own elongated form among the trees.
The lovely couple who bought this painting said it reminded them of a particular wood in Wales. In buying the piece, I like to think that my shadow, visible in the foreground of the painting, became their shadows—and my wood, their wood.
