In many cultures, the colour blue carries a sense of transcendence. In nature, this is perhaps most vividly reflected in the collective intake of breath that comes with stepping into a bluebell wood at the height of its May glory.
At such moments, I am reminded of the evocative lines by Gerard Manley Hopkins in his poem May Magnificat:
“And azuring-over greybell makes
Wood banks and brakes wash wet like lakes
And magic cuckoo call
Caps, clears, and clinches all—”
