There is a sense of lung-expanding pride that comes with the privilege of inhabiting a beautiful landscape. The small woodland that provided the subject for this painting is just such a space. “Proud-pied April” appears as a phrase in Shakespeare’s Sonnet 98 and strikes me as a wonderfully vivid alliterative summation of a sense of communal attachment—a passing nod that says, “We are so lucky to live here.”
